Sometimes improvements in gardens are made not just for aesthetics but for ease of maintenance. This ensures your outdoor spaces looks their best all year round, whilst saving you time and ongoing costs to maintain it. Artificial grass is growing in popularity, and for good reason; it’s a low maintenance solution that looks realistic. It also allows you to maintain your green spaces.Â
Recently, we completed an artificial grass installation in Warrington, creating a low-maintenance and modern lawn area.
Project Overview
We were called about this artificial grass project in Warrington, Cheshire. The existing lawn already looked very presentable, but had become uneven in places. The owner’s main goal was to reduce the maintenance required to keep their garden looking its best all year round.
With our experience in installing high-quality artificial grass in Cheshire and further afield, we explained to the customer that we could provide the perfect solution.
Work Carried Out
Our team travelled to the customer in Warrington to get a better understanding of their requirements for this project. We showed the customer pictures of our past artificial grass installs and provided them with a sample of the synthetic grass we install. It’s important to get a team that is experienced as this type of project requires precise cutting and seam joining to ensure a durable finish with a natural look.
We then took a look at the existing lawn and measured the area so we knew how much artificial grass would be needed. We left the customer with a quote they were happy with and very soon after we were ordering the materials required. The project was now underway.Â
Removal of the existing grass
The project began in the back garden with the removal of the old grass to make way for the aggregate base. The more preparation work at this stage, the better the result. We carefully dug up the old turf using a mini digger and peeled away the layers of soil to make room for our base. We didn’t have to dig down too far, but careful measurements ensured that the grass would end up being flush to the paving.
Aggregate base install
Once the old turf and some soil had been excavated, we could look at levelling the ground. We ensured the exposed soil layer was compacted and levelled to create a solid base whilst maintaining the slight natural fall of the garden. The existing gradient was useful as it was so subtle that it wasn’t easily noticeable, but ensured that rainwater runs off away from the foundations of the house.
The next step was to put a treated timber border in place to define a clean edge, which would contain the infill when poured. This was the same as the old grass perimeter, leaving the flower borders next to the fences. We could then tip the stone rubble using wheelbarrows over the prepared surface. The material of the sub-base is important in order to make sure the area remains permeable to allow natural water drainage. We would then compact and level the gravel using machinery, spending lots of time making sure we got it just right without any high spots.Â
Membrane install
Before the turf could go down, a membrane layer was installed over the freshly levelled sub-base. This is done to ensure no weeds will come up through the surface whilst allowing water drainage.
Laying the artificial grass
Now came the moment of truth: laying the new turf. This was another important stage, as careful cutting of the material would be key to getting a tidy and natural-looking result. We measured, cut and laid the grass, fixing it with galvanised nails around the perimeter.
The turf could then be styled and brushed so the individual blades of grass to give the finishing touch to a natural look. We even reinstalled the washing line in the centre for the customer.
The site was then tidied before we invited the owner out to see the results.
