New Commercial Groundworks Project in Runcorn – Ramp Install

Improving access and safety around commercial premises is important for smooth daily operations. Having well maintained entrances and exits at factories is essential so equipment and deliveries can be wheeled easily inside the building with minimal risk of injury.

Recently, as part of our commercial groundworks in Runcorn, we completed a full ramp replacement at a local factory, upgrading an ageing slabbed surface to a modern and durable reinforced concrete finish.

Project Overview

We were approached by a factory in Runcorn in  Cheshire that was experiencing ongoing issues with their existing access ramp. The old ramp had been constructed from paving slabs, which had deteriorated over time.

The surface had become uneven, with visible movement between slabs, and weeds were starting to grow through the joints. This created both a safety concern for staff and a practical issue for transporting wheeled equipment such as pallet trucks and trolleys.

The client required a long-term solution that would improve safety, durability, reduce maintenance and ease of access for everyday factory operations.

Removal of Existing Ramp

The first stage of the project involved the removal of the existing paving slab ramp.

We dismantled and excavated the entire surface, ensuring all loose and unstable materials were fully removed. The area was then prepared back to a suitable level to allow for the installation of a new, solid base.

This step is crucial in any industrial groundworks project, as it ensures the new installation is built on stable ground.

Steel Reinforcement

Once the sub-base was prepared, we could install the reinforced steel grid before the concrete pour.

The steel reinforcement was carefully positioned and fixed in place. The steel mesh significantly improves the tensile strength of the concrete, helping it withstand heavy industrial loads over time without cracking.

This method provides a robust foundation, particularly suited to  commercial environments.

Concrete Pour

Once the reinforcement grid was fully installed and secured, our next step was the concrete pour.

The concrete was carefully poured and levelled to form a smooth, continuous ramp surface. Special attention was given to maintaining the correct gradient, ensuring safe and easy access for both pedestrian and wheeled equipment.

This smooth surface has a greater durability than a slabbed ramp and will remain smooth and level for ease of access.
